Encountering Jesus – Lesson 4
The Resurrection and the Life

John 11:25-26 (ESV),“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

This morning we’re continuing our series entitled “Encountering Jesus,” where we’ve been focusing on the incredible life-change that's available to all who meet Jesus and accept Him for who He says He is; The “Door” between heaven and earth - the only “One” who can give fallen human beings the promise of “eternal life.” And because we are facing a time of mourning and loss as a church body, today’s message is particularly relevant to us as we try to make sense of our pain and loss. In John 11, Jesus encounters two sisters named Mary and Martha. They are mourning the loss of their brother, and Jesus’ close friend, Lazarus. The sisters are deeply moved when they see Jesus arrive. They both tell Him, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died”. As human beings, this is a subject that we all struggle to deal with when it hits close to home.

As we’ll see in this morning’s text, Jesus not only finds a way to comfort and strengthen both sisters in their time of need, but He also provides a promise that can comfort all who will take Him at His word. While facing the death of his good friend Lazarus, Jesus proclaims some of the most profound words ever spoken; I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. The question for you to answer today, is the same one He asked right after making this statement; “Do you believe this?”

In His Service,
Pastor Steve
